Was numb and scroll’n away, until..

“only steel cased automatic time only reference made in the vintage era.”

Expand full comment

If you put in enough qualifiers you’ll find an “only”

97 out of the 159 distinct references from the vintage era are stainless steel cased. 104 are automatic. 34 are time only.

Just one watch in the middle of that Venn diagram. 😂

No real reason to split by year? That’s like saying a 1970 56gs is diff to a 1971 one? Presumably the 3 dials of the 6145-8000 is 3? Or 6 rather once accounting for 6146.

I wouldn't agree that it's the same, because there is an actual difference between the watches from the different years (beyond just a serial number).

6145-8000 there are actually 8 distinct references -

Early GS dial steel

Early GS dial GC

Late Hi-Beat dial steel

Late Hi-Beat dial steel on bracelet

Late Hi-Beat dial GC

Late Hi-Beat dial 18K

Cross dial

Cross dial on bracelet

6146-8000 there are 10 - equivalents to the 8 above, plus the silver sunburst dial, and an additional late high beat dial in steel that is Daini production. Plus, there is also the export 6146-8009 GC (identified as "Base Metal")

Ah yeah true - but the 45gs Toshiba is just 1 reference across diff years? What’s the 6146 daini production ? Any link?

The way I look at this is to think about what I would anyone would need to own in order to have a complete collection. I wouldn't say that, for example, just having the 4522-8000 Toshiba from 1969, and not having the 1970 and 1971, would make a collection complete.

6146-8000 and 6146-8009 are both Daini. There are actually two different variants for the -8009, one Waterproof, and one Water Resistant. I don't have any links to hand, but I think @tokyo_watchs on Instagram has posted a couple of examples. I have an -8009 somewhere, but can't find it right now.

Oh, and I completely forgot about the 6145-8000 Toyota, so there's another one!

I’ve been looking for that exact number! How many 57gs combos in that 159 ?

Expand full comment

Actually, I should probably count it as 164 as I didn't split out the Toshiba's by year. If you count the four 57GS Toshiba's individually, then I make it 13 distinct 57GS references. I'm not splitting out all the transitionals where dials/movements/casebacks can overlay (although I do make this distinction on the 18K's).
